Minnesota State Fair judging arena demolished to make way for new AgStar Arena 
The Minnesota State Fair's 1960s Judging Arena was demolished last week to make way for the new AgStar Arena. Construction will be substantially complete by April 2012.

Farmers in Douglas County may qualify for disaster aid 
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 11 counties in Minnesota as natural disaster areas due to the combine effects of excessive rain, excessive heat, high winds, tornadoes and an early fall frost that occurred during the period of April 1, 2011, through Sept. 15, 2011.

Buckthorn - the quiet invader 
Common buckthorn has been quietly invading our natural wooded areas and now occupies the under story of valuable woodlands across the state. Most of the native trees and shrubs found in woodlots, fencerows, windbreaks and forest edges are in the process of losing their leaves.

‘Minnesota Cover Crops Decision Tool’ launched on Web 
Interest in cover crops has been increasing in the Midwest in the last few years. Field days, workshops, and multi-day conferences on the topic are being held around the region. Educational events, research, on-farm demonstrations, and utilization can be found right here in Minnesota. Cover cropping is still somewhat of an enigma, however, and many agronomic questions exist.

Farm Bill deficit deal must include real reform, says Center for Rural Affairs 
In response to a letter from congressional Agriculture Committee leadership recommending a $23 billion farm spending cut, the Center for Rural Affairs urged that a portion of the savings come from ending the single most wasteful and counterproductive feature of current farm policy – unlimited federal crop and revenue insurance subsidies to the nation's largest farms and wealthiest landowners.
