I am a previous resident of Alexandria. Prior to leaving Alexandria, I experienced domestic violence, stalking and harassment, which was extremely destructive to the well-being of myself and three children from my marriage. Reporting this pattern of abuse (occurring even after divorce) to the Douglas County legal system resulted in re-victimization.
When you hear someone talk about Someplace Safe, many think of domestic violence victims.
But what about victims of sexual assault? Or victims of any other general-type of crime such as arson, robbery, identity theft, harassment or even property crime?
Patty Wetterling said she didn’t know about domestic violence when she was younger.
She grew up in a loving and nurturing home.
As Wetterling got older and heard about violent acts, however, she couldn’t fathom the idea of domestic violence. Most people can’t imagine the idea, she said.
Someplace Safe, along with WINGS and UCAN, two community groups that advocate for a non-violent and domestic abuse-free community, are hosting two upcoming events to honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Otto Bremer Foundation awarded $100,000 for two years of funding for Someplace Safe of Douglas County, which offers domestic violence advocacy services.
