Commentary - That pesky Constitution wasn't mentioned in Dalman's column
The column contained plenty of insults and ridicule directed at those who might have a different viewpoint. The radical left would be so proud of Dalman’s clever mastery of those Saul Alinsky tactics of intimidation. Alinsky himself would have marveled at his ability to avoid references, evidence and facts to support his emotional outrage.February 01, 2013
Commentary: Why doomsayers are wrong about newspapers
It seems like each time a newspaper implements a bold new strategy or deviates from the traditional model, pundits interpret those changes as acts of desperation. Ironically, these are often the same pundits who claim newspapers are not innovating and transforming fast enough.By Caroline Little, National Newspaper Association , January 26, 2013
Commentary - A resolution for rural America
It’s time for an adult conversation with rural Americans, said Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack. With our shrinking population, he said, we are becoming less relevant to American politics and we need to reverse it.January 23, 2013
A New Year’s resolution for our veterans
As we gather with family and friends this year to enjoy the holiday season and the New Year and give thanks for our many blessings, there’s no better time to remember our men and women in uniform who have given our country the gift of freedom and liberty for generations.By U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar , December 24, 2012
Commentary - Holidays can be a very stressful time
We know that without a supportive community we could not possibly do our jobs. Advocacy is not the work of a few, but the concerted effort of an entire populace. We all need to do our part to support victims of violence, to stand up to the bullies and let them know we will not tolerate abuse in our community.December 12, 2012
Commentary - Manufacturers need to capitalize on their perceived value to the economy
We don’t need a panel of cable news pundits to realize that America’s manufacturers were among the big winners of the national election.December 05, 2012
Commentary: A bipartisan goal should be good constituent service
The rigors of the campaign are still fresh, but for newly elected House members and senators, the hard part is just beginning. Already, they’re inundated with advice on the issues they’ll be facing: the fiscal cliff, crises overseas, how to behave in a highly partisan Congress.By Lee Hamilton , November 25, 2012
Commentary - Senator Ingebrigtsen supports waste-to-energy over landfilling
To most Minnesotans, remembering to put the trash can out on the curb each week is the extent of the time they spend thinking about the issue. But behind the scenes, a conversation is beginning to take form that will cause all Minnesotans to pay special notice to their trash and put extra thought into where it ultimately ends up.November 20, 2012
Commentary - Every child deserves a family
Over the past year, I have spoken with many youth who are in, or just left, our foster care system. Their stories veer from inspirational to heartbreaking. The young man who transitioned from foster care to college (a triumph, without doubt) described move-in day at his dorm, when he realized he was the only person on his floor without a family helping with those boxes.November 16, 2012
Commentary: Every day is Veterans Day
When people think of veterans, they often think of warriors, but Hurricane Sandy offers just the latest reminder of the significant humanitarian and often times life-saving work performed by our veterans on a daily basis.By James E. Koutz, American Legion National Commander , November 11, 2012
Commentary: Civil discourse and the clash of ideas
Editor's note: The following pre-election commentary was written by former Congressman Lee Hamilton. As a public service, Hamilton writes regularly about Congress and what individuals can do to make representative democracy work better. His columns are part of the educational mission of the Center on Congress at Indiana University, where he is director. (www.centeroncongress.org)By Lee Hamilton , November 03, 2012
Commentary - Help stop the cycle of abuse
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The question is, what should we be aware of?October 12, 2012
Commentary - Use extra care during harvest time
Harvest season is a culmination of more than a year of planning, hard work and patience. It’s an exciting time for farmers, but it can also be a dangerous time. We received a tragic reminder of that danger recently when a worker died in a grain entrapment incident in Waseca County.September 26, 2012
Commentary - Clerks express concerns over voter ID
We are city and township clerks representing other city and township clerks, but we are not representing city or township governments. We are non-partisan officials, who hold various personal political party convictions and are the head election officials in our various precincts.September 19, 2012
