Commentary – Homestead Market Value Credit change marks end of shell game
In the past few weeks, there has been extensive media coverage concerning the state Legislature’s discontinuation of the Market Value Homestead Credit program in favor of the new Homestead Market Value Exclusion. Not surprisingly there has been, and remains, a great deal of confusion about what this change will really mean – and finger pointing over who supported the change.September 23, 2011
Commentary – Time to remember the Constitution
WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 17, 2011 begins the national celebration of Constitution Week. The weeklong commemoration of America’s most important document is one of our country’s least known official observances. Our Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties and freedom, and to ensure those inalienable rights to every American.September 14, 2011
Commentary – What are 'the others' here for?
There’s something in all of us that urges us to help others. We get a sense of completeness and fulfillment from contributing to our culture or helping individuals accomplish things.By DuWayne Paul, Echo Press Columnist , September 07, 2011
Commentary – Dairy safety net isn't working
It has been nearly three years since the combination of declining milk prices and escalating input costs devastated the dairy industry. Many producers were forced out of business while others just barely managed to survive.September 07, 2011

Commentary – Use local businesses for home repair work

Commentary – High water – what do we do about it?
First, I should explain that I am probably one of the most seriously affected by the recent record high water in our lakes. My yard is now a part of the lake and my home is threatened by imminent flooding. My garage and driveway are flooded and I wear boots every day because I can’t get to my home without wading through water.August 10, 2011

Tournament anglers have big impact
Over the past few weeks, I’ve read letters to the editor and commentary articles in the Echo Press both pro and con on fishing tournaments. As a retired fishing guide, avid angler and pretty good tournament angler I found the exchanges interesting with some good points on both sides. But what I found most interesting was the absolute certainty with which the non-tournament writers stated that fishing tournaments (and bass tournaments in particular) were bad for a lake system and that tournament anglers had no concern for the lake or community.By Wayne Ek, Alexandria, MN , June 22, 2011
Problems with bass fishing on lakes
Several letters and articles about Senator Ingebrigtsen’s aquatic invasive species legislation have appeared recently in the Echo Press. The writers appear to be offended by the legislation and want to protect the image of bass fishing tournaments and participants.By Bud Nielsen, Alexandria, MN , June 08, 2011

On Saturday, May 21, the Minnesota Legislature voted to place an amendment to ban same-sex marriage on the November 2012 ballot. Currently, Minnesota Statute Section 517.03 prohibits same-sex marriage. This proposed amendment to the Minnesota Constitution has caused discussion, conversation, debate, and hurt, and the public vote is more than one year away.June 01, 2011
