COLUMNS
When one door closes, another one opens
I am going to share with you, my dear readers, my last column for the newspaper, which is in today's issue, February 11. Enjoy. Here it is: As I sat down to my computer, fingers poised upon my keybo...

It's Our Turn: 2012 elections: Time for change – get excited
I should have known when I sealed my “I VOTED” sticker inside the return envelope that something was going to be amiss.
Now, I don’t profess to be a political guru, nor do I even claim to be well versed in the inner-workings of government. But I do have an earnest interest in helping shape the future of our fractured system.

Column - Will I outlive The Count of Monte Cristo?
Will I outlive The Count of Monte Cristo?
I am 63. That novel is 1,248 pages.
At my age, I've learned not to buy green bananas. You'd think I'd learn the same lesson about novels and that I'd stick to short ones.
But, no. Diehard bookworms never learn.

Column - 1912: License plate fee for three years is $1.50
January 2002:
Kenneth Peterson, survivor of Pearl Harbor, relived the “Day of Infamy” on his return trip to Pearl Harbor. He was pictured with some mementoes: several uniforms, a Purple Heart and a small piece of metal from a Japanese plane.

Column - Things I think about
When you get to be my age and have made most of life’s mistakes (like I have), you tend to spend a lot of time reflecting on the past, the present and the future.

Column - 1961: County sets levy for new courthouse building
December 1986
Twenty-two 4th graders in the Friday release time at First Lutheran Church made and donated two quilts to Douglas County Human Services Department.

Column - This time, Tea Party overplayed its hand
It's also obvious these Tea Party representatives (so-called) have no ideas whatsoever in their heads. Their whole "raison d'etre" is to unravel and then destroy virtually every federal program that helps working people and then to eventually destroy the government itself.

120 Years - People behind the technology make it work
Throughout the year, the Echo Press has attempted – in this monthly column and elsewhere – to share with its readers how your local, hometown newspaper has justified using the slogan: “Giving information life since 1891.”

Column - Go see Hugo movie to enter dazzling dream
While walking from the movie theater to my car, I looked around and thought to myself, "What an ugly, dull world this is." It was ugly and dull because I had just stepped out of an extraordinary dream – an astonishing, rhapsodic, gorgeous movie called Hugo. Just a week ago, I would have bet my life that movies this great simply are not, in this jaded age, possible anymore. Glad I didn't bet.

Column - 1986: 911 emergency system is operational
December 2001
On December 15, Chad Ferguson and Taite Anderson took advantage of the warm weather to bring out the water skis and skooters to the open waters of Lake Latoka.

Column - The grand entitlement program
It seems like that is what Christmas has become – a grand entitlement program. Children expect lots of toys and gifts. Adults expect something they really want, but not necessarily need. And the most egregious of all, large retailers who believe it is our duty to buy lots of stuff so they can have a successful season and year.

It's Our Turn: Ted is getting on my nerves
I guess every relationship has its low points and Ted and I have hit bottom.
Now that the newness of our relationship has fizzled, I guess it’s up to the two of us to keep things interesting.

Column - Share Christmas generosity with humane society
This Christmas season we should all follow the good example of 9-year-old Payton Olson of Alexandria. For her ninth birthday, Payton told her friends she didn't want any gifts for herself. Instead, she asked them to bring pet foods and other pet supplies to donate to the Lakes Area Humane Society. The results – big bags of supplies – made the humane society staff very happy; not to mention the animals.

Column - 1911: Remodeling plans submitted for high school
December 1961
Jingle Bells Telethon, which ran from Saturday at 10:45 p.m. until 2:45 Sunday morning, brought in record-breaking contributions of $1,635.35.

Column - Some politicos live on Planet Arrogance
On which planet does Newt Gingrich live? It's got to be Planet Arrogance, the one that orbits the big fat sun called Greed.
How dare that fat-cat candidate vilify the poor?

It's Our Turn: Winning at all cost feeds scandals at colleges
Scandals in college athletics reached its pinnacle at Penn State a few weeks ago, and the sad thing is I wasn’t shocked when it all went down.
Nothing surprises me in college sports anymore.
