Minnesota senators took nearly 17 hours to approve a bill allowing childcare providers and personal care attendants to unionize.
The bill passed 35-32 a little after 8 a.m. today after senators debated it continuously since Tuesday afternoon.
Gay Minnesotans and their supporters rallied with tears of sadness rolling down their faces two years ago. Today, their faces are covered with tears of elation as the Minnesota Senate voted to allow them to marry.
Jay McNamar, DFL-Elbow Lake, represents part of Douglas County in District 12A and voted in favor of the House bill today to allow same-sex civil marriage. He e-mailed the following explanation of his vote:
Anticipation. Frustration. Elation. Love. Anger. Patience. Impatience. Today’s House vote on gay marriage attracted the range of emotion as Minnesotans began arriving at the Capitol this morning. A midday start was anticipated for debate on a bill that would allow same-sex marriages in the state.
Today, U.S. Sens. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) introduced the energy legislation to be included in the 2013 Farm Bill, which includes several provisions expected to create jobs throughout Minnesota and the country.
