The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Minnesota will hold a free mental health first aid training course May 20-21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glenwood State Bank, 2221 South Broadway, Alexandria.
In Our Own Voice (IOOV), a free public education program featuring two speakers sharing their compelling personal stories of living with a mental illness and achieving recovery, will be offered in Long Prairie on May 9.
A groundbreaking ceremony for a new mental health building at the St. Cloud Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center is planned for Thursday, April 25, at 1 p.m. The ceremony location is the construction site located north of Building 28 and west of Building 9.
This week, U.S. Senator Al Franken (D-Minnesota) and U.S. Representative Richard Nugent (R-Florida) said they will be introducing bipartisan legislation with 25 cosponsors that will make communities safer by improving access to mental health services for people in the criminal justice system who need treatment.
More than 90 people gathered at the Broadway Ballroom Event Center in Alexandria last Friday to discuss the current and future condition of mental health services in Minnesota and in the five-county region.

Mental health was the focus of a walk in Alexandria last Thursday afternoon.
Participants in the Walk for Wellness gathered at the Big Ole Viking statue and walked to City Hall in an effort to fight the stigma that clouds mental illness.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Minnesota will hold a free Mental Health First Aid interactive training course in Alexandria designed to teach basic first aid skills needed to help a person who is experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
This 12-hour course is aimed at improving mental health literacy.
