May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and while the dangers of melanoma are well known, it is important not to neglect the warning signs of the two most common types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which can also become disfiguring and even deadly if not diagnosed and treated promptly.

She lobbied people she saw to check their homes for radon, a colorless and odorless radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer.

As of 2009, the overall death rate for cancer in the United States had declined 20 percent from its peak in 1991, translating to the avoidance of approximately 1.2 million deaths from cancer – 152,900 of these in 2009 alone.
Every 25 minutes, one person in the U.S. dies from radon-related lung cancer. It is the largest environmental cancer risk and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Fortunately, the risk is largely preventable, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Health.
In the U.S. on January 1, 2009, there were approximately 2,747,459 women alive who had a history of breast cancer.
And the numbers are only growing.
In 2012 alone, it is estimated that 226,000 more women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 39,000 will die from it.
Under a clear, starry night on July 13 and 14, about 700 people gathered at Citizen’s Field in Alexandria to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Douglas County.
The event began at 6 p.m. on Friday night and ran until 6 a.m. Saturday morning.
Celebrate, remember, fight back – three words that affect millions of lives.
Since its inception, more than $3 billion has been raised by the Relay for Life with more than 5,000 communities hosting relays each year, including Douglas County.
This year’s Douglas County Relay for Life will take place this Friday and Saturday at Citizen’s Field in Alexandria.
In 2010, more than 550,000 people of all ages died from cancer and millions of friends and families were affected by it.
But through raising funds, awareness and remembrance, they keep fighting back.
The American Cancer Society’s 28th annual Relay for Life will take place on July 13 and 14 at Citizens Field in Alexandria.
