COLUMNS
When one door closes, another one opens
I am going to share with you, my dear readers, my last column for the newspaper, which is in today's issue, February 11. Enjoy. Here it is: As I sat down to my computer, fingers poised upon my keybo...

Column - Long live Dickens for lucky readers
Few words in all of literature are as moving as these from Charles Dickens: "Please, sir, I want some more." That line, of course, is spoken by Oliver Twist, the hungry orphan who, holding up his empty bowl, dares to ask for "seconds" in a vicious workhouse, only to be sarcastically rebuffed by the fat, overfed goons who run the place.By Dennis Dalman , February 03, 2012
It's Our Turn: Kill's first full recruiting class offers hope
National Signing Day in athletics serves as an additional holiday for a lot of college football fans. I admit, I fall into that obsessive group that tries to predict the future success of a program based on a bunch of “paper tigers” as Gophers head coach Jerry Kill calls them. The truth is we really won’t know how good these players will be for two or three years, but that’s never stopped a sports fan from looking into his crystal ball.By Eric Morken , February 03, 2012
Column - 1912: Fire destroys Hawkinson building in Parkers Prairie

I'm just sayin' - American spirit ... First in a series
Previously, I noted my belief that our country and our culture is like a three-legged stool that is supported by three basic foundations: constitutional government, economics and social programs. Since it all began with governmental documents, I will start at the beginning and subsequently move through the other two legs supporting the stool in subsequent columns.By DuWayne Paul, Columnist , February 01, 2012
Column - See the clowns go round and round
This race for the Republican presidential nomination is better than having a front-row seat at the circus. See the goofy car jam-packed with colorful clowns go round and round. A clown falls off, then gets back on. Two more clowns fall off and try to get back on.By Dennis Dalman , January 27, 2012
It's Our Turn: Pinterest junkie confesses
My name is Lori Mork and I am a Pinterest junkie. Yes, I must confess. Pinterest has me by the eyeballs and won’t let go. If you’ve never visited this quirky little website, you don’t know what you’re missing – except addiction.By Lori Mork , January 27, 2012

It's Our Turn: Nothing embarrassing about this media
I’m going to make a confession.
During the earlier years of my career as a journalist, there were times I was embarrassed to be “part of the media.”
Those times usually came up when some big media frenzy occurred, typically involving someone famous – the O.J. Simpson car chase, all things Michael Jackson or Princess Diana, the JonBenet Ramsey story, etc.

Column - King's 'Dream' speech still induces shivers
Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech still has the power to send shivers up and down my spine.
I will never forget the time I heard that speech, broadcast live on TV on an August afternoon in 1963 in my St. Cloud living room. It was such a moving masterpiece of oratory that it took my mind off its hinges.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department posted an order at the public accesses on Lake Reno that closes the lake to motorized traffic, other than snowmobiles and ATVs, because of unsafe ice conditions.

I'm Just Sayin' - We are in T-R-O-U-B-L-E and where's the sacrifice?
No, this is not an expose on the 1992 country music hit, T-R-O-U-B-L-E, by Travis Tritt, although it is one of my favorite songs of all time because it brings back a lot of memories from my younger days; memories of too much time spent in places I should not have been.

It's Our Turn: Fall victim to your nose
There are certain smells I wish could be bottled, although they probably wouldn’t smell the same. I adore the smell of a horse’s muzzle and there’s really nothing that can beat the smell of puppy breath for me.
Smelling something or remembering a certain scent will flood my mind with thoughts of so many things.

Column - Find it in the phone book? Good luck!
If I were a dictator, my first decree would be this: All people MUST have their phone numbers listed in phone books. But since I'm not a dictator, I have to slog along like everybody else, unable to contact people because I don't know how to reach them.

Column - 1912: Long cold spell and temps plunge to 32-below
January 1987
John Engebretson, a “once-in-a-million” musician, was one of two Minnesota students selected for the McDonald’s All-Star Band that marched in the Fiesta and Rose Bowl parades.

It's Our Turn: 2012 elections: Time for change – get excited
I should have known when I sealed my “I VOTED” sticker inside the return envelope that something was going to be amiss.
Now, I don’t profess to be a political guru, nor do I even claim to be well versed in the inner-workings of government. But I do have an earnest interest in helping shape the future of our fractured system.
