It's Our Turn - Home is the nicest word there is
“Home is the nicest word there is.” That’s one of my favorite lines in the Little House on the Prairie book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The word “home” is like a warm, cozy blanket. To me, the word means comfort and security. It brings to mind years of happy memories of a place that offers peace and refuge and quiet from the rest of the world.

It's Our Turn - Chance encounters add to vacation memories
When people go on vacations, they typically take pictures of the sights they come across – sunsets, mountains, the ocean, landmarks and such. But the most vivid part of a vacation can be found in the people you happen to meet.

It's Our Turn - Chocolate-gilded barbarities
I bite into a fresh-from-the-oven brownie. The warm aromas are enticing; I taste the sweet chocolate, the light texture and the child slavery. Wait, what? Slavery only exists in history books, right? It ended with the Civil War, right? Wrong.

It's Our Turn: Walking by Myself
Ever since I can remember, I have always loved walking in people’s footsteps. My whole life has been a big game of follow-the-leader.

It's Our Turn - You're indispensable
We honor moms on Mother’s Day for their hard work, sacrifices, and ability to shape the next generation. They deserve our praise for all these things and more. However, we often seem to expect less of dads.

Our Turn: Reality check: How well do you fare?
Welfare check. The first thought that pops into your mind when you hear those two words defines from which side of the tracks you hail. In the Echo Press office, we listen to the police scanner to stay informed on what’s happening in the area. One of the services law enforcement provides is a welfare check, a visit to a residence to inquire on a person’s well-being. Welfare check means something different to me.

Letter - Also content in silence
In our house, I am the one who is content in silence, always turning off the unlistened-to radio, the unattended-to-music that my wife leaves on. (We don’t watch any TV.)

It's Our Turn: Food on a boat with dad
It gets me every time – a summer sausage sandwich on a burger bun smeared with mustard and butter. Instantly, I’m 10 years old again, back in my mom and dad’s kitchen making and packing sandwiches for an afternoon of fishing with Dad.
