The Civil War ended in 1865 and claimed at least 620,000 and possibly up to 850,000 lives, either through battle, disease, starvation or accidents. Shortly afterward, the Grand Army of the Republic issued a general order designating Decoration Day. Since World War I, that day has been referred to as Memorial Day and is set aside as a day to remember all veterans who have died in all U.S. wars.

Delivering comfort to wounded warriors
Piece by piece, stitch by stitch, quilt by quilt -– a group of quilters volunteered their talents over the last 18 months to deliver comfort to wounded soldiers. Five local women from the Honor Quilts organization recently joined forces with quilters from Fergus Falls, Perham, Dent and Underwood to sew and hand-deliver 950 Quilts of Valor (QOV) to injured soldiers at Fort Knox and Fort Campbell.
