Column - Facts about ObamaCare should dispel hysteria
Even some of my relatives who should know better have been buying into some of the scare tactics waged against “ObamaCare” in recent months. Relatives and acquaintances, knowing I am in favor of the Affordable Health Care Act, have asked me all kinds of horror questions: Will they really have a death panel that will decide some people are just too old to get health care?

Column - To banish your boredom, connect with life
I relish words of wisdom from old-time friends. Yesterday, I received a gem of an e-mail from Kerry Nelson of Lowry. At the time he sent it, he was being wowed by the fall foliage near Hibbing. Like me, Kerry feels happiest and liveliest in the fall.

Column - May this semicolon fad fade quickly; it's long overdue
Someone ought to declare open hunting season on semicolons, or at least on those who use them so incorrectly. There is an alarming semicolon trend, contagious as the flu. It’s a shame they don’t have a shot for semicolonitis. Some writers are using them, willy-nilly, as gussied-up periods or fancy-dancy commas.

Column - It's time to pull troops out of Afghanistan
It’s about time the United States pulls out of Afghanistan lock, stock and barrel. Carrying on a “holding-action” war there, after all these years (nearly 12 to be exact), is becoming as absurd as our long involvement in Vietnam. At this point, the Afghan war is America’s longest war.

Column - Terrorists learn their lesson; the hard way, again and again
Just the other day, on the morning of September 11, I was writing a news story on my computer in my office. The television was on in the living room, and as I often do, I was half-listening to the news as I wrote. Suddenly, I heard a news alert. A female newscaster was talking to a woman who had called in on her cell phone. The woman, with a mixture of alarm and disbelief in her voice, was saying she had just seen a plane crash into a New York City skyscraper.

Column - Romney's speech had high, low moments
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s speech at the Republican Convention was everything his supporters hoped for, and then some. He was very convincing as a nice guy who was formed by a loving family, a good work ethic and a deep faith in his religion.

Column - Let's condemn Russian trio's conviction
The ghost of Josef Stalin still stalks Russia. Last week, a female punk-rock trio named “Pussy Riot” was convicted of “hooliganism” and sentenced to two years in prison.

Column - Now's the time to go monarch hunting
Every child - and adult, come to think of it - should have the chance to witness in person one of the most awe-inspiring spectacles of nature: the life-cycle stages of the monarch butterfly. Seeing it on film just won’t do. That’s like trying to fathom the grandeur of the Grand Canyon by seeing snapshots of it.

Column - Old object can unlock time instantly
Rarely do I stop at a garage sale; not unless I practically collide with one. I have enough “stuff” and no room for any more. The other day, however, while driving home, something told me to pull up curbside at a garage sale just up ahead.

Column - It's time to dump the useless penny
The other day in the Walmart parking lot, as I was getting out of my car, I spotted at least a dozen pennies on the asphalt. I didn’t pick them up. Just a few years ago, I would’ve picked up every one of them.

Column - Ryan's budget reflects Rand's silly philosophy
In the world of Ayn Rand, there is a handful of super-achieving capitalist heroes, and then there’s the rest of us — the moochers, looters and parasites (three of Rand’s favorite words).

Column - Is Opinion Page too opinionated?
After 30-plus years as a columnist, I’m still perplexed and amused when some readers call the Opinion Page, including my columns, “too opinionated.” After all, it’s not called the Opinion Page for nothing.

Column - I like Facebook; I dislike Facebook
People often ask me what I think of Facebook. “Not much,” is my answer. Well, actually, I should say, “I like it and I dislike it.”
