Column - I'm hungry so let's eat Grandma
Hey, I have a good idea: Let’s eat Grandma. Whoops!, I mean to say: Let’s eat, Grandma.

Column - Voting Rights Act must never be nixed
Antonin Scalia should do the country a favor and resign from his lifelong job as U.S. Supreme Court justice. Recently, Scalia described the 1965 Voting Rights Act as a “continuation of racial entitlement.”

Column - Karen will be greeted with a cucumber martini
There are many children – two generations of them, most of them now grown-ups – who are mourning the unthinkable loss of Karen Simmons, the beloved local librarian.

Column - Should students have to learn a foreign language?
Should study of a foreign language be required in high school or college? I used to think so; now I’m not so sure. After all, how many foreign-language students go on to advanced study of a language to become fluent enough to use that language in their lives?

Letter - Dalman sounds like a bully
I hadn’t received your paper for 10 years. Unfortunately, my husband brought home the February 15 copy.

Letter - Why suspend our right to firearms?
I hear you have created quite a response with your gun control position. I would like to add one more voice.

Column - Anything scientific must, of course, be a leftist lie
There is nothing more stubbornly reactionary than those who deny anything and everything scientific. Facts to these people are nothing but pesky nuisances or, worse, lies disguised as “facts” by the liberal news media.

Column - More guns are not the answer
I want to thank all of the readers who responded to my recent column about assault weapons. Some e-mail messages and letters were written in wholehearted agreement. Others were downright nasty and, as is so typical, mostly unsigned.

Commentary - That pesky Constitution wasn't mentioned in Dalman's column
The column contained plenty of insults and ridicule directed at those who might have a different viewpoint. The radical left would be so proud of Dalman’s clever mastery of those Saul Alinsky tactics of intimidation. Alinsky himself would have marveled at his ability to avoid references, evidence and facts to support his emotional outrage.

Column - How many diplomas come courtesy of SparkNotes?
How many students actually read the novels they are assigned to read? Not as many as should, I would guess. It seems we’re galloping headlong into some kind of Post-Literate Age in which words — pitifully butchered words — are used for texting, mainly.

Column - Should filibuster be limited or abolished?
The other day a neighbor asked me, “What’s a filibuster?” “It’s a legislative procedure to block a proposed bill from coming up for a vote,” I said. “It’s in the news a lot lately because Republicans use it constantly.”

Column - 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' still packs a punch
When Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, met President Abraham Lincoln in the White House, the great man supposedly said to her, “So you are the little lady who helped start this big war.”

Column - Ban assault weapons, once and for all
“Guns don’t kill people.” Go tell that to the parents of 20 dead children in Newtown, Connecticut. “Guns don’t kill people” is just one of the many deflective slogans so dear to the hearts of gun worshippers.

Column - Hooray! Winter makes a come-back
When I woke up last Sunday, the room was filled with angelic white light – that kind of light that can mean only one thing: new-fallen snow. I got up and looked out the windows. Snow! Still softly falling, it had blanketed everything.

Column - Mailbox brings rude reminders of mortality
These days, at my age, I’m leery when I approach my mailbox. I never know what nasty surprise awaits me there. This week it was an offer for a free hearing test. Last week there were several offers for pre-planned burials and a bunch of pitches for life-insurance policies. The week before that it was an offer from the Lakes Area Cremation Society.

If, as some insist, President Obama was born in Kenya, then surely Mitt Romney was born on another planet. Will his spacey delusions never end?
