Every 45 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, which accounts for 795,000 victims each year. While anyone can have a stroke, some factors can increase the risk, such as smoking, an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, ethnicity, and family history of strokes. It is also estimated that only 28 percent of stroke victims are younger than age 65.

The popular event, hosted by Viking Sportsmen and many volunteers, is a day where senior citizens and special handicapped people have the opportunity to ride along on pontoons to fish or sightsee for a few hours.

Under a clear, starry night on July 13 and 14, about 700 people gathered at Citizen’s Field in Alexandria to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Douglas County. The event began at 6 p.m. on Friday night and ran until 6 a.m. Saturday morning.
