Letter - Visit and support cemeteries on Memorial Day
The Civil War ended in 1865 and claimed at least 620,000 and possibly up to 850,000 lives, either through battle, disease, starvation or accidents. Shortly afterward, the Grand Army of the Republic issued a general order designating Decoration Day. Since World War I, that day has been referred to as Memorial Day and is set aside as a day to remember all veterans who have died in all U.S. wars.
