Alexandria Opportunities Center hindered by wicked winter, county grants rate variance
Unusual circumstances prompted the Douglas County Commissioners to support a rate variance for the Alexandria Opportunities Center (AOC) at the May 28 county board meeting. AOC Executive Director Mike Burke explained that because of winter storms, the facility had to close for six days, resulting in a loss of $60,000 that cannot be recouped.

But tucked behind numerous warehouses in the south side of Alexandria, sits a building where a lot of this middle work is completed: the Alexandria Opportunity Center (AOC). What makes the AOC different than other businesses is that the center is not there to produce a product; it’s there to provide jobs to its workers or clients, all of whom have disabilities.
