The Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division (SFMD) kicked off Fire Prevention Month in Minnesota by revealing the top causes of deadly fires, encouraging Minnesotans to take personal responsibility for preventing them and unveiling a new public education campaign aimed at saving lives.

Unicycling on a soda bottle?
Each boy took a turn behind and in front of the lens as they took photos of each other riding a unicycle. In June, they submitted two photos they felt had just the right composition. The boys soon learned that Corage’s photo of Pfeffer riding the unicycle was selected by the Jones Soda staff as a favorite and displayed on the website for people to cast their votes.

Employees here at the Echo Press were excited about winning 10 awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. It’s always gratifying to have one’s professional work praised by peers and it was satisfying to be honored in several different categories again this year – advertising, graphic design, headline writing, website (first place for the fourth straight year) and the page you’re reading now, the editorial page.

On October 19, I took a trip that will go down in my memory bank as one of the best trips I’ve ever taken. I chaperoned the 9th grade Discovery Middle School (DMS) trip to Washington, D.C. (see facing page) I’d never been to Washington, D.C., but it sounded like a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
