Top 10 - a look back at top 10 stories of 2012
2012 was a year of new beginnings and tragic endings in Douglas County. The year marked the start of construction on a new Alexandria high school. Students at Alexandria Technical and Community College also moved into a new home, Foundation Hall, the college’s first on-campus housing facility. There were also new beginnings on the health care scene. Broadway Medical Center merged with Sanford Health, and Alexandria Clinic merged with Douglas County Hospital.

Small cities worry over state aid's future
Cities would receive more state money next year if legislators approve Governor Mark Dayton’s budget, but after that some could get smaller checks from the Capitol. Dayton proposes adding $80 million next year to the Local Government Aid (LGA) program that primarily helps Greater Minnesota and urban cities, a 19 percent increase.

Milfoil found in Lake L'Homme Dieu
Eurasian watermilfoil has been discovered growing in Lake L’Homme Dieu in Alexandria, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A small patch of the nonnative, invasive aquatic plant was discovered by an angler June 27 in the middle of the lake between the Krueger’s Creek and Rotary Beach public accesses.
