Berniece was born February 11, 1925 in Ida Township, Douglas County, to Carl and Edna (Johnson) Norling. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Garfield. Berniece graduated from Alexandria High School. After her schooling, she moved to Minneapolis to work.
Berniece was united in marriage to Leslie Walters on August 20, 1949 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Garfield. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Karin. They lived in Hoffman, where Berniece worked at the family resort on Elk Lake. Prior to that, she worked at Erickson Funeral Home in Elbow Lake.
In 1964, the family moved to Belgrade, where they bought a hardware store. Berniece helped start the Ladies Auxiliary for the Belgrade Fire Department, to which Leslie belonged. They owned and operated the hardware store until 1983, when they retired.
They moved to rural Dent on Star Lake to be closer to Karin and be full-time grandparents and then moved to Vergas when Karin and her family moved there. The past few years, Berniece lived at the Assisted Living in Frazee.
Berniece enjoyed crocheting, traveling, taking camping trips to Little Pine Resort on Gull River in Brainerd, and wintering in Mesa, Arizona in their motor home. Her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
She is survived by her daughter, Karin (Rodney) Pederson of Vergas; granddaughters, Kari Pederson (Brian); and Kris (Nathan) Thon, all of Vergas; great-grandchildren, Owen and Kendra; brother, Mervin (Donna) Norling of Bloomington; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Norling of Alexandria and Margine Norling of Garfield; and brother–in-law, Warren Walters of Mesa, AZ.
Berniece was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leslie; brothers, Vernon, Marvin and Romaine; and brothers-in-law, Duane and Norman Walters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Garfield.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
