Romaine Kenneth Norling, 83, passed away September 15 2012 at Douglas County Hospital with his family by his side.
Romaine was born May 22, 1929, the son of Carl and Edna (Johnson) Norling. He was baptized by the Rev. Mattson at St. Luke’s Church in Garfield and confirmed by the Rev. Gustafson on December 6, 1942 at St. Luke’s Church in Garfield.
He attended School District 88 in LaGrand Township.
Romaine was drafted into the U.S. Army on January 16, 1951. He went to the Ordnance School at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and was certified as track vehicle chassis rebuilder. He was in the 702 1st Platoon Ordnance, 2nd Division in Korea. He was honorably discharged from active duty on October 17, 1952 and later honorably discharged from active reserve on October 19, 1956.
Romaine was a long time member of the VFW Post 936 and American Legion Post 87.
Before going into the service, Romaine drove an egg truck for Garfield Poultry Farms. He worked with his dad and brothers as a carpenter.
Romaine was united in marriage to Margine Krueger on October 8, 1955.
He was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Church in Garfield and served as a janitor for a number of years. Romaine also served on the church council and served for many years on the cemetery board.
Romaine started working at Bellanca Aircraft in 1957 as a machinist and worked there for 34 years. He worked for 10 years at ITW Heartland. Romaine retired in July of 2001. He started his own business, sharpening drills and continued with that until his eyesight began failing. He also rebuilt impellers for ALASD for 35 years. Romaine helped a lot of people out with projects using his experienced machining skills.
Romaine loved playing cards with family and friends. He loved taking time out for his two grandsons and teaching them many things like hitting a baseball, teaching them lots of card games, deer hunting and also teaching them about machining. Hunting was a passion of his.
Romaine is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Margine Norling; son, Ronnie (Evvy) of Santa Maria, CA; daughter, Cheryl (Bradley) Timm of Garfield; grandsons, Ryan (fiancée, Laura Price) Timm and Brady Timm; sister, Bernice Walters of Frazee; brother, Mervin (Donna) Norling of Bloomington; sister-in-law, Eleanor Norling of Alexandria; brothers-in-law, Palmer (Lucy) Krueger of Garfield and Alvin (Verdell) Krueger of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Leola Krueger of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews.
Romaine was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Edna Norling; father- and mother-in-law, William and Ernestine Krueger; brothers, Vernon and Marvin Norling; and brothers-in-law, Les Walters and Delbert Krueger.
A funeral service was held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Garfield. The Rev. David Gran officiated. Music was provided by Audrey Aga, Gregory Kappahn and St. Luke’s Men’s Chorus. Interment followed at St. Luke’s Cemetery.
Casket bearers included Ryan Timm, Brady Timm, Mark Norling, Gary Norling, Willis Krueger and Bill Hanlon. Honorary casket bearers included all of Romaine’s friends.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, American Legion Post 87 and the Minnesota National Guard accorded military honors.
