Charles “Charlie” J. Wagner, 81, died August 28, 2012 at the Grand Arbor Assisted Living campus in Alexandria.

Charlie was born September 28, 1930, in Stillwater, the son of Charles and Adele (Klatt) Wagner. He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1947 and attended the University of Minnesota for a short time.

His schooling was interrupted when he joined the National Guard and was activated during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia during this time and he continued in the National Guard, serving as the finance officer for the 47th Infantry Division. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1975.

Charlie was united in marriage to Joan Anderson on May 21, 1955. The couple raised two boys, Tom and Dan.

Charlie began his occupational career as a banker with the First Merchant’s Bank in St. Paul and went on to serve as vice-president of the First State Bank of New Brighton and then as president of the Plymouth State Bank during the 1970s. In 1974, Charlie and Joan purchased the Valhalla Resort on Lake Darling in Alexandria. They began operating the resort and moved to Alexandria in 1976. They sold the resort and retired in 1991.

Charlie enjoyed working with his hands, having personally built the family’s first home in Mahtomedi and then rebuilding and remodeling the cabins and home at Valhalla. Unfortunately, arthritis came to him prematurely and took away his ability to pursue this passion.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Wagner of Alexandria; sons, Tom (Rebecca) Wagner of Edina and Dan Wagner of Prior Lake and Holmes City; grandchildren, Ryan (Salwa) Wagner of Shorewood, Andrew Wagner of Eden Prairie, and Joseph Wagner of Madison, WI; sister, Dorothy Teske of Stillwater; brother-in-law, Bob (Virgie) Daniels of Stillwater; nieces, Nancy Daniels and Sharon (Bob) Carlson; as well as special family friends, Jason Westin and Rick Vendel.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Daniels; brother-in-law, Bob Teske; and nephew, Rob Daniels.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 1 at 2 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Alexandria with the Rev. Wayne Erickson officiating. Inurnment will be at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion, VFW and Minnesota National Guard.

Donations to the Arthritis Foundation are encouraged in lieu of flowers or other memorials.
