Joseph Michael Smith, 91, died Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Diamond Willow in Alexandria.

Rose was born June 18, 1922, in Millerville, the daughter of Frank and Mary Gebur. She attended grade school at Seven Dolors School and helped her father on the farm. She later moved to Alexandria, where she worked at the Lady of Mercy Hospital.

Joseph was born February 10, 1921 in Millerville, the son of Verdi and Winifred Smith. Joe attended country school, served in the Army during WWII and worked on the family farm with his parents and brothers. The family moved into Alexandria in the late 1950s.

Rose and Joe met and fell in love and were united in marriage on December 1, 1962. Ann, their only child, was born in 1965. Rose stayed at home to care for her family. Joe worked at the Alexandria Country Club as a greens keeper. Rose tended to her vegetable garden and made many quilts throughout the years. She was very involved with St. Mary’s Catholic Church, helping in many church activities and events. Rose had volunteered her time to organizations like Knute Nelson Auxiliary and the Alexandria Garden Club. Joe continued to farm with his brother Ed.

Rose’s energetic and engaging personality will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her. Joe, while quiet and reserved, loved a good story and liked to laugh.

They are survived by their daughter, Ann (Marty) Olson of Eagan; grandsons, Ed Olson and Tom Olson, both of Eagan.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Lawrence Gebur.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ed Smith and Jim Smith; and sister, Mary Kvitek.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, August 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria with Father Steve Binsfeld officiating. Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria.
