Betty Mae Walberg, 86, died Friday, July 13, 2012.

Betty Mae Walberg, 86, died Friday, July 13, 2012.

Betty was born May 16, 1926 in Alexandria, the daughter of Halvor and Cora (Dubry) Sliper. She grew up in Alexandria where she graduated from Central High School.

On April 22, 1945 Betty was united in marriage to George Walberg. The couple made their home in Nelson for many years. In 1976 the couple moved to Garfield and in 1982 they moved to Alexandria. Betty worked as a cook at the Country Kitchen and then later at Toby’s Hillside. In 1978 she went to work at Tom Thumb in Alexandria. After 20 years with Tom Thumb, Betty retired in 1998.

In 2000, George died and Betty remained in her home until moving to Osakis in 2005. Two years ago she became a resident at Community Memorial Home in Osakis.

Betty has been a member of the Alexandria Covenant Church since 1953. She was active in the church’s Ladies Aid for many years. She was also an honorary member of the Galeon Auxiliary in Osakis and a member of TOPS.

Betty was a Twins fan and Kirby Puckett was her all-time favorite player. Betty enjoyed spending time working crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She loved playing cards, especially whist and cribbage. Betty liked to bake and cook for her family; spending time with her children and grandchildren was very important to her; spoiling the grandchildren was something Betty did very well.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; brother, Bill Sliper; grandsons, Rick Walberg and Greg Randall; and son-in-law, Clayton Jern.

Betty is survived by two sons, Wally Walberg and wife, Jean, of Ironton, and Bill Walberg and wife, J, of Elko; three daughters, Jean Brown and husband, Alan, of Sauk Rapids, Joyce Jern of Alexandria and Kathie Randall of Osakis; grandchildren, Scott and Sara Walberg, Stephanie and Jay Eide, Susan and Mark Boyd, Julie Randall, Larry and Amy Randall, Wanda and Dustin DeFoe, Jason and Angie Jern, Kimberly Jern and Will, Jennifer Drussell and Bubba, Kim Brown, Justin and Yvonne Brown, Chris Walberg, Emily Walberg and Kelly Anderson; and 24 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, July 18 at Alexandria Covenant Church. The Rev. John LeVahn officiated and Cindy Orn provided music. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria. Casket bearers included Brittany Jern, Kayla Randall, Cody Drussell, Rick Walberg Jr., Corey Snelson and Chris Walberg. Honorary casket bearers included all of Betty’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
