Leroy Chris Backberg, 88, Oakdale, died June 18, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence; their infant son, Barry; and his brother, Melvin.
Born October 8, 1923 to Jonas L. and Christine Backberg in Staples, Leroy exemplified the small town values of his upbringing. He loved God, family, volunteering, singing, walking, sports and rowing his boat. He treasured family time and found special joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Roy graduated from Staples High School. He was in the Army during WWII, and, while on a leave, he married his sweetheart, Florence Anvid. They shared 65 beautiful years of love and devotion. Together they raised four children -- Brian, Bruce, Bonnie and Blaine. Roy’s 35-year career with Lutheran Brotherhood successfully combined his religious values and financial acumen.
Roy and Flo lived in many locations, but “home” was on the lake in Alexandria. There they shared their love of birds, nature and beautiful sunsets. Family will always remember fun times at the lake and Dad’s passion for rowing.
In addition to his children, Roy’s family includes Kathy (Brian), Cindy (Bruce), Susan Daniels (Bonnie), and Mia (Blaine); seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lenore (Lowell) Christianson and sister-in-law, Ceil Backberg.
Services will be held Friday, June 22 at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 430 12th St. NE, Staples. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Staples.
Visitation is Thursday, June 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul and at church one-half hour prior to service.
The family extends a special thanks to the staff and residents of Oak Meadows Senior Living for their care and compassion. Memorials may be given to Como Park Conservatory and Faith Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are with Willwerscheid Funeral Home; (651) 228-1006.
