W. Ted Hill was born October 22, 1919 in Morgan Park, Duluth, the son of Walter Eugene and Laura (Meyers) Hill. Ted attended Morgan Park kindergarten and elementary school and Nokomis Junior High, West Duluth. The family then moved to Minneapolis where Ted attended Nokomis Junior High 9th grade and Minneapolis Roosevelt High School, graduating June 5, 1937.
Ted enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 26, 1937. He was in Navy Boot Camp through February 1, 1938 and in machinist school from March 1938 to August 1938 in Norfolk, VA, He served aboard the USS Tuscaloosa starting in September 1938, Ted was discharged from the Navy on October 25, 1941.
He was employed as a machinist starting November 1941 at General Mills, mechanical division in Minneapolis to February 1944. He re-entered the Navy and shipped to Barbers Point, T.H. where he was stationed until the end of the war in August 1945. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945.
Ted married his high school sweetheart, Florence Marie Melvig, on January 3, 1942. Son Ronald Walter Hill was born December 9, 1942. The family moved to Alexandria on April 1, 1946 and went into the automotive machine business. Daughter Judith Ann Hill was born October 5, 1947.
He sold the business in 1961 to become machine shop instructor at Alexandria Technical School. Ted taught the machine tool program for 19 years, retiring from teaching in 1981.
Ted was a member of the American Legion Post #87 and VFW Post #936, and a member of the Alexandria Elks Club and served as trustee for two years.
He became a member of Episcopal Church in 1946 and served as Sunday school superintendent, for several years on the Vestry and as Senior Warden for two years. He also served as choir director for many years. He joined the Constellation Lodge #81 A.F.& A.M. in 1946 and served as master in the early 1950s. He joined the Alexandria Golf Club in the middle 1950s and served on the board of directors for nine years and president for two years. He also was the Resorters Tournament chairman for 29 years.
Ted and Florence lived on Lake Darling until 1968 and then built a new home on Lake Winona. They lived there until 2001 when they moved to Windmill Ponds and later to Bridgewater Estates. In June of 2010 they moved to Bethany Community, where Ted continued to live until his death.
Ted is survived by his son, Ronald (Linda) of Alexandria; daughter, Judy (Melvin Hildebrand) Hill of Bartlesville, OK; grandchildren, Stevie (John) Willams, Jude (Mindi) Henry, Julie (Roger) Bienusa, Stacy Hill, Matthew Hill (Robert Edman); great-grandchildren, Jack, Henry, Liza and Max Williams, Lake, Sophia and Zebediah Henry, Sara and Christopher Bienusa.
Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; parents, Walter and Laura; sister, Gladys; and brothers, Edward and Robert.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 13 at Bethany Community Chapel in Alexandria with the Rev. Andrea Olson officiating. Music was provided by Virginia Hegre, Mindi Henry and Henry Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Williams, Liza Williams, Henry Williams, Max Williams, Lake Henry, Sophia Henry, Zebediah Henry, Sara Bienusa and Christopher Bienusa.
