Richard Skinner, 83

Richard "Dick" Clayton Skinner, 83, Miltona, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at St. William's Living Center in Parkers Prairie, following a year-long battle with multiple myeloma.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 9 at 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona with the Rev. Jonathan Sorum officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Kevin Lee and vocalist, Dedra Zwieg. Private family burial will take place at Spruce Hill Cemetery, Spruce Hill Township. Honorary pallbearers will be the Miltona V.F.W. and the Parkers Prairie American Legion.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dick was born July 9, 1928 in St. Louis Park to Floyd and Jane (Hoff) Skinner. His family moved to Evansville, where he lived until the 7th grade, and then moved to Dassel. He graduated from Dassel High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953, receiving two battle stars for his service. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Dassel. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis from 1955-1957, graduating with a degree in sheet metal/air conditioning.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Ottoson on October 8, 1955 in Minneapolis. Following their marriage he worked as a sheet metal mechanic in Salt Lake City, Utah. They returned to the Twin Cities where he worked for Northwest and Western Airlines, retiring from Western Airlines in 1983. He drove school bus for 17 years and worked for the city of Minneapolis as a custodial building engineer from 1983 until 1992.

He and his wife bought a cabin on Lake Irene, near Miltona in 1968, where they spent summers. They moved to their lake home to live full-time in the fall of 2001. Dick's wife, Shirley, died in February of 2002. He continued living on Lake Irene until Easter of 2012.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Miltona V.F.W., Parkers Prairie American Legion and the Minneapolis Eagles Club Post #34. His hobbies included fishing, traveling, sports of all types and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by a daughter, Marcia Bohn of Lakeville; two sons, Reid (Sonya) Skinner of Alexandria and Randy (Emily Simonson) Skinner of Parkers Prairie; brother, Dale (Randy Grabowski) Skinner of San Diego, California; sister, ViAnn (John) Fort of Chisago City; brother-in-law, Carl Fratzke of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister, Delores Fratzke.
