William was born August 18, 1935 in Pelican Lake Township, rural Ashby, the son of Peter O. and Emma (Wohlers) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christ Lutheran Church. Bill attended Rural School District #7 through the fourth grade, then attended Ashby Public School, graduating from Ashby High School in 1953. When Bill was 5 years old, his father passed away, and after high school he helped his mother run the family farm.
William and Audrey Ertel were married on June 15, 1963 in Hammond, Wisconsin. They lived two years in Elbow Lake, then in 1965 moved to the family farm in Pelican Lake Township, which had been in the family since 1883. Along with farming in the late 1980s, he started Bill Hanson Trucking, Inc., which he operated until selling the last over-the-road truck in 2002. In 1998 they moved to their home on Pelican Lake County Road 10. Bill was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church of Elbow Lake and then of Peace Lutheran Church in Ashby where he had served on both church boards. He also had served on the board for the Ashby Federal Credit Union and the Ashby Equity.
Bill enjoyed his farming and looked forward to each spring, he liked winter time coffee with the fellows and discussing farming practices, and treasured going hunting with his son and friends. In his later years, he looked forward to one day a week when he would have his grandson Alexander for the day and they would fish off the dock.
Bill is survived by his wife, Audrey; daughter, Roberta (Arlen) Kalvik of Fargo; son, Michael (Denise) Hanson of Ashby; two grandchildren, Alexander and William Hanson; aunt, Ruth Mickelson of Elbow Lake; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Henry of Anoka and Connie Bartsch of Twin Lakes, Michigan; brothers-in-law, Francis Ertel of Inver Grove Heights and Glen Ertel of Elk River.

Audrey, Reberta and Mike Sorry to hear of your loss. Billy was a very fine gentleman even if he helped hang me by my belt when I was in second grade at Ashby High. We have had many laughs over that thought the years, You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Billy is out of pain. Michael & Karen Ellingson Sierra Vista, AZ 85635Sierra Vista, AZ 06/05/2012 5:01 PM
