Mercedes Pauline Hallberg Horgan, age 87 of St. Cloud, died April 23, 2012 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House.

Mercedes Pauline Hallberg Horgan, age 87 of St. Cloud, died April 23, 2012 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House.

Mercedes was born March 26, 1925 (the same year as Paul Newman) to Benjamin Clarence and Edith Hallberg in Minneapolis. She was a proud graduate of Alexandria High School and St. Cloud State University.

Mercedes worked for many years as an administrative assistant in the graduate studies office at SCSU. She loved listening to operas, reading, playing and viewing golf, and traveling to California. Mercedes was a member of AAUW, St. Cloud Library Reading Room Society, St. Cloud Country Club and Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Mercedes is survived by her sister, Clarice Blanton; niece, Edie (Mike) Points; nephews, Kevin, Paul (Brenda), Steve (Sandy) and Ron (Elizabeth) Kirkwood; sister-in-law, Mary McDonough and her family, cousins Pearl and Willimine; and long time friends, Mary Choate and Carol Coborn.

Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard J. Horgan; brother, Benjamin Hallberg; and sister, Rachel Kirkwood.

Special thanks to her caregivers, Connie Swanson, Jeannine Owen-Block and the staff and volunteers at Quiet Oaks Hospice; and to the members of The Holy Cross Church community for the love and support for Mercedes and our family.

Memorials are preferred to St. Benedicts, Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Quiet Oaks Hospice House.

Funeral services were held April 25 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Cloud with the Rev. Aaron Bell and the Rev. Dave Nelson officiating. Burial was at Lebanon Cemetery in New London.
