She was born April 17, 1923 in Kerkhoven, the second child and daughter of Edward O. and Esther V. (Peterson) Nelson. She was baptized and later confirmed from the Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. Her father died early and she along with her sister, Eloise, were raised by their mother in Kerkhoven.

Marie graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1941 and worked for the Kerkhoven Bank for a year before moving to Minneapolis to live in the Clara Doerr Club while attending Minnesota School of Business. After school she accepted employment at the Minneapolis Iron Store, where she met Martin Linkert. They were married September 3, 1949. They made their home in Minneapolis for the next 55 years.

Marie began working for Dayton’s in the early 1960s and retired from Dayton’s sales audit department.

After Martin’s death in 2004, Marie moved to the Heritage Care Community of Edina in 2005 and resided there until her death.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister; and her husband, Martin.

She leaves behind three children, Catherine (William) Siira, Brandon, Julie (David) Jones, Berlin, WI, and Gregory (Diane) Linkert, Lonsdale. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Andrew (Emily) Siira, Jessica (Kevin) Rankl, Jennifer (Mike) Young, Christopher Linkert, Barbara Jones, Carrie (Matthew) Kraft, Karen (Mark) Erickson, Katie Jones, Kimberly (Patrick) Afflias, Susan Jones, Cory Linkert, Douglas Jones, Micheal Jones, Benjamin Jones, Rachel Jones and Matthew Jones and eight great-grandchildren, Wesley, Tyler and Lacey Siira, Hannah and Natilie Kraft, Kaitlyn Erickson and Luke Young.
