Dorothy Alice Martin, 83, of California and formerly of Alexandria, died April 15, 2012 at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California.
Dorothy was born December 4, 1928 to Ella M. Benjamin Knabe and Charles H. Knabe in Jackson County, Minnesota. She attended school in Heron Lake.
Dorothy married Worthing G. Martin in Flanders, South Dakota on April 30, 1946. The couple then farmed in Heron Lake for two years before moving to rural Kensington in 1948, where they farmed. The couple was blessed with five children, Linda Lou (Glenn) Russell, David Worthing (Diane) Martin, Kathleen Ella (Daniel) Hoff, Shelly Ann (Jesse) Tellez, and Bradley Samuel Martin.
Dorothy has nine grandchildren, Currey (Connie) Russell, Amy (Alex) Hernandez, Marlo Hurley, Heather (Chris) Phillips, Hilary (Jason) Olson, Benjamin Martin, Josh (Sandi) Rahn, Jessie (Troy) Gross, and Anthony Tellez. Dorothy has 14 great-grandchildren, Haley and Brandon Russell, Kylie, Rowan and Claire Hurley, Ella Landon, Brodie Phillips, Tanner, Tate and Gracie Olson, Cayden Martin, Carter and Keaton Rahn, and Trey Gross.
Dorothy loved her family and loved to bake and do canning in the summertime. She also enjoyed playing cards and doing word find puzzles. She enjoyed her many years of living on the farm and being a farm wife.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Worthing “Bud” Martin; her parents, Ella and Charles; three brothers, Louis, Pete, and Ben; and two sisters, Myrtle and Lila.
A funeral service was held for Dorothy on Saturday, April 21 at Kensington Covenant Church in Kensington with the Rev. David T. Wallin officiating. Marvin Andreasen and Pam Anderson provided music. Interment followed at Pike Lake Cemetery near Kensington. Pallbearers included Chris Phillips, Jason Olson, Troy Gross, Eric Barnes, Dale Knabe, Virgil Knabe and Anthony Tellez. Honorary pallbearers included all of Dorothy’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
