Dennis Ray Balgaard, 72, of Olivia, died Thursday, March 29, 2012 at his home.

Dennis Ray Balgaard, 72, of Olivia, died Thursday, March 29, 2012 at his home.

Dennis was born June 7, 1939 in Evansville to Melvin and Gladys (Bergen) Balgaard. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Evansville High School. Denny served in the U.S. Navy for nine months and then lived in Minneapolis where he worked at Honeywell.

Denny met Joanne Lenore Jacobs and they were married on July 11, 1970 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville. They have made their home at Olivia since 1971 and were blessed with their son, John.

Denny worked at Trojan Seed Company and later worked for 20 years driving the van for the Renville County Veterans Service Office. Denny was a longtime member of Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia and he faithfully mowed the church yard for many years. He had enjoyed driving tractors, riding bike and gardening. Denny also loved John Deere tractors and truly was a “farmer at heart.”

Denny is survived by his wife, Joanne Balgaard of Olivia; his son and daughter-in-law, John D. and Heidi Balgaard of Chippewa Falls, WI; his brothers, Marvin (Audrey) Balgaard of Howard Lake, Luverne (Cynthia) Balgaard of Burnsville, Truman Balgaard of Alexandria, and Ronald (Juanita) Balgaard of Alexandria; sister, Beverly (Robert) Bonkoski of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Helene Balgaard of Rochester; brother-in-law, William Schroeder of Evansville; nephews, DuWayne Balgaard, James Bonkoski, Donald Schroeder and Marlin Schroeder; nieces, Barbara Balgaard, Julie Bonkoski, Jennifer Lee and Cynthia Drake; and many other friends and relatives.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger Balgaard; sister, Alvina Schroder; and one nephew, Leslie Schroeder.

Blessed be his memory.

Funeral services were held April 3 at Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia with Pastor Matt Hausken officiating. Burial was at Olivia Cemetery.
