Avis LaVonne Voges Heyen, 93, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda.

Avis LaVonne Voges Heyen, 93, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda.

Avis, the daughter of Irvin H. and Emma (House) Cochran, was born April 25, 1918 in Mason Township, Murray County. She grew up on farms in Murray County and attended Lake Beauty Country School.

Avis was united in marriage to Charles Voges on February 18, 1937. After their marriage they lived in Slayton. She remained in Slayton after Charles passed away. Avis married Ellsworth Heyen on November 15, 1958 at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington. They made their home on a farm north of Hadley. In 1978 they moved to Slayton.

Avis worked in housekeeping for human services and was the housekeeping supervisor at the Slayton Manor Care Center. They entered the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda in the fall of 2009, where Ellsworth passed away on January 13, 2012.

She was a member of the Slayton United Methodist Church, where she had been a member of the United Methodist Women. Avis also belonged to the Neighborhood Birthday Club. She enjoyed music and dancing, playing cards, visiting, cooking, talking on the phone with her siblings and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her five children, Bill Voges and his wife Judy of Bridgewater, SD, Marilyn DiGiulio of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim Voges and his wife Janet of Slayton, Nancy Heyen and Don Cramer of Sioux Falls, SD and Julie Vincent and her husband Steve of Alexandria; daughter-in-law, Esther Voges of Blue Earth; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Cochran of Slayton; sister, Doris Schreier of Slayton; sister-in-law, Hermina Leysen of Slayton and brother-in-law, Rudy Heyen of Rushmore.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Charles and Ellsworth, son, Frank Voges, son-in-law, Daniel DiGiulio, brother, Ralph Cochran and four sisters, Ruth Gray, Kathryn Karl, Evelyn Cochran and Eva DeGriselles.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 31 at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Slayton with the Rev. Jon Marburger officiating. Interment will be at Slayton City Cemetery.

Visitation is Friday, March 30 at Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton from 4 to 7 p.m. and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. To send condolences, visit totzkefuneralhome.com.
