Evelyn Lorna Christenson Weigand, age 100, died Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Peaceful Bliss Assisted Living in Alexandria, where she had been a resident for the past three years.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 26 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wendell with Dr. Eugene Boe officiating. Burial will be at Ness Cemetery in Elbow Lake.
Visitation is at Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake on Saturday, February 25 from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service; and Sunday one hour before the service at the church.
Evelyn was born January 5, 1912 to Christen A. and Emma (Osen) Christenson at the home farm in Stony Brook Township, Grant County. She attended rural school in District 30 and graduated as valedictorian of her class from Elbow Lake High School in 1930. Following one year of teacher’s training in Fergus Falls, she taught five years in rural schools. It was during this time that she met August Weigand. They were married at Ness Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake on August 30, 1936. They began their married life on the Weigand homestead, three miles west of Wendell, and were blessed to spend most of their 71 years of marriage on that farm.
Evelyn was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wendell, where she taught the Sunday School High School Bible Class for many years, held various offices in the women’s organizations and participated in Bible study groups. She served on the Grant County Hospital Board, was active in PTA, Mother’s Club, and Band Boosters. She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Europe, gardening, growing violets, photography/photo albums, reading, and kept a diary for 57 years. Evelyn was especially happy surrounded by her family, and she took a genuine interest in all people. Family, friends and neighbors were always welcome at her “coffee table.”
Family members celebrating her life include five children, James (Kay) Weigand of Wendell, Curtis (Laraine) Weigand of Alexandria, Elaine (Michael) Burgess of Ashby, Lois (Robert) Dahl of Marshall, and Doris (David) Reeve of Alexandria; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, Debra (Edward) Lake and children Michelle Torres, Daniel Lande, Curtis Lake; Laurie (Timothy) Champ and children Ryan, Joshua, Mariah; Todd (Clare) Weigand and children Samuel, Zane, Chloe; Shana (Hans) Zahrbock and children Sadie and Simon; Kirscha (Daniel) Bloomstein and sons Jacob and Jack; Scott (Melissa) Weigand; Teisha (Paul) Hohn and children Luke and Ella; Aaron (Melissa) Cooper and daughter Marina; Derek (Sarah) Burgess and sons August and Harrison; Jonathan (Sarah) Dahl and children Sawyer and Annika; Adam (Sara) Cooper; sisters-in-law, Mary Fjosne, Clara Lysne and Lena Greeley; and many nieces and nephews.
