Steve Nye, 55

Steve Nye, 55, Alexandria, entered the peace of Heaven on February 13, 2012 from his home in Alexandria, after a brave fight against cancer.

Steve was born April 10, 1956 in Alexandria to Clayton and Doris (Hertwig) Nye. He grew up in the Alexandria area, living in Carlos, Nelson and Belle River and also by the golf course in Miltona. He also lived for a time in Coon Rapids before moving back to the Alexandria area in December of 2004.

Steve worked at the Coca-Cola plant in Alexandria, at Brenton Engineering in Carlos and as a custodian for the Taco Bell restaurant. Most recently, he had worked as a line leader at the Alexandria Opportunity Center.

Steve was able to put a smile on your face with his happy outlook on life. He had many different hobbies, including receiving an award at the Special Olympics for his swimming abilities. He also enjoyed woodworking, basketball, bowling, gardening and taking long walks. Steve also liked to help his stepfather with farming, watch the birds and just sit by the lake and visit with his family. During the winter months he kept busy doing cross stitch and word search puzzles

Steve loved to travel, and got to experience Duluth by helicopter, train and boat all in one trip. He also savored his visit to the Renaissance Fair, where he enjoyed riding an elephant and dressing in costume. He loved country music concerts and socializing with people. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Robert Barten; and brother, Bruce Nye.

Steve is survived by his brother, Bradley and Joan Nye of Cambridge; sister, DeAnn (Darrell) Nye-Radke of Brewster; special friend, Heidi Goodin of Alexandria; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Steve were held Saturday, February 18 at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Chapel in Osakis with the Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. Interment was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Parkers Prairie, with active pallbearers Orville and Marvin Hertwig, Jarek Bannister, Alvin, Joshua and Robert Radke. Honorary bearers were the staff and residents of New Beginnings Home and the staff and co-workers at Alexandria Opportunity Center.
