Thomas “Tom” Paul Nelson, age 56, of rural Carlos, died unexpectedly Thursday, February 2, 2012, at home.

Tom was born March 31, 1955 to Vernon and Olga (Nhyus) Nelson in Alexandria. He was baptized and confirmed at Spruce Hill Lutheran Church. He grew up on the home farm in rural Carlos, attended country school and graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria in 1973. He attended Alexandria Technical College for his associate degree in farm management.

Following his education, he began working with Continental Bridge as a welder, in addition to working and living on the family farm. He worked as an over-the-road truck driver in the mid 1980s, out of Missoula, Montana for Jones Brothers Trucking. He returned to Contech Bridge Solutions, formerly Continental Bridge, where he worked until the time of his death.

Tom was united in marriage to Marjorie Streich on April 20, 1991, and to this union, a daughter, Erica, was born. Following their marriage they continued living on the family farm.

He was a member of Esther Lutheran Church, Spruce Hill Cemetery Board and N.R.A. He was a former member of Spruce Hill Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church in Miltona. He was generous with his gifts as a welder and built many church projects, including the handicapped ramp at Spruce Hill Lutheran Church and the aluminum can collection at Esther Lutheran Church. Tom enjoyed hunting, reading, spending time with family and friends and supporting his daughter’s equine pursuits.

Tom is survived by his wife, Marjorie “Marge” Nelson of rural Carlos; daughter, Erica Nelson of rural Carlos; brother, Duane Nelson of Rock Springs, Wyoming; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Avis; and two brothers, Raymond and Kenneth.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 7 at Spruce Hill Lutheran Church in Spruce Hill Township with the Rev. Jeanette Bidne officiating. Music was provided by organist, Kevin Lee.

Burial was at the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Bernardy, Mike Schlosser, Dave Bunde, Bob Maher, Ray Maher, Mike Ahrens, Bruce Sadlemyer and Jeff Becker. Honorary pallbearers were his Contech shop co-workers.
