Genevieve was born April 22, 1922 in Lowry, the daughter of Frank and Wilhelmina (Moberg) Swenson. She was baptized and confirmed at Norunga Lutheran Church and attended country school in Lowry.
On October 22, 1949, Genevieve was united in marriage to Gordon Backlund in Lowry. To this union two children were born, Janice and Daryl. The family lived in Alexandria, where Gordon worked as a carpenter and Genevieve stayed at home raising their family. She later worked at Bethany Home in the kitchen.
Genevieve and Gordon enjoyed working in their garden and loved when people would come and visit. She enjoyed having her family over for the holidays, fishing with Gordon and being in the outdoors. She had a soft spot in her heart for her granddaughter, Jennifer, and they enjoyed their time together.
Genevieve will be remembered as a very kind lady who had a strong faith and was very involved in her church.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice (James) Dyrdahl of Garfield, granddaughter, Jennifer, of Fargo; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, in 2006; son, Daryl, in 2008; parents; and 12 brothers and sisters.
A memorial service was held Thursday, February 2 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Garfield with the Rev. David Gran officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria.
