Roger Arthur Swanson, 85, died Friday, December 30, 2011 at his home.

Roger Arthur Swanson, 85, died Friday, December 30, 2011 at his home.

Roger was born March 12, 1926 in Swanville, the son of Arthur and Christina (Walters) Swanson. He graduated from Swanville High School in 1944 and then worked on the family farm with his father until he was 26 years old. He then married Illa Zinniel on May 31, 1952 in Swanville. Together they had one daughter, Joyce. They lived in Freeport, where Roger worked for the creamery for four years.

Roger and his family then moved to Bloomington and for 30 years Roger worked for the Federal Stamp Company as a tool and die specialist. During Roger’s retirement he and Illa moved to Alexandria where Roger continued to enjoy fishing, camping in different state parks and taking walks with his loving wife, Illa.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Illa Swanson of Alexandria; granddaughter, Nicole Nelsen of Chantilly, VA; son-in-law, Terry Nelsen of Chantilly, VA; brother, Russell (Ann) Swanson of Albert Lea; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Marie Nelsen; brother, Lloyd Swanson; and sister, Grace Burns.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, January 3 at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Binsfeld officiating. Entombment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Mausoleum.
