Genevieve Althea Herbranson, 91, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on December 11, 2011.
She was born February 23, 1920 on a farm near Woodworth, North Dakota . Her family moved to Minnesota when she was 16. She graduated high school when she was only 16 and attended a business college.
Genevieve met the love of her life and a fellow Norwegian, Elmer Herbranson, at a dance. They married in 1940, and the dance continued for the next 69 years. They lived in Bismarck, North Dakota and Omaha, Nebraska before they moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1956 and raised four children. In their later years, Genevieve and Elmer loved to travel and visited every continent but Australia and Antarctica.
Genevieve was active and a leader in numerous organizations. She was proud that all three of her daughters were members of Tri Delta sorority. She was very active in the mothers' organization, Tri Psi, serving as president and treasurer of the local chapter and treasurer of the international organization.
She was also very proud of her Norwegian heritage and both she and Elmer were very active in the Kansas City area Scandinavian community. She served as the Norwegian representative to the Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Counsel. Genevieve was a past president of the Kansas City Scandinavian Women's Society also and she was a member of Sons of Norway.
Genevieve was a warm and loving woman with a wonderful sense of humor and she will be greatly missed by the family and friends she touched.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Helmer and Nettie Bah; and husband, Elmer.
Survivors include her children, Wayne Herbranson, Bonnie Attwood, Diane (Tom) Adamson and Ingrid (David) Dines; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings, Merle Bah, M.D., Betty Lou Olson and Curtis (Marilyn) Bah; many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Friday, December 16 at First Lutheran Church, 6400 State Line Road, Mission Hills, Kansas.
