Helen Mary Ann Vacek, 94, Alexandria, died peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2011, at home, surrounded by her family.

Helen Mary Ann Vacek, 94, Alexandria, died peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2011, at home, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 14 at 1 p.m. at New Life Christian Church in Alexandria with Pastor Jay Jenson officiating. Music will be provided by Patty Kakac and Sue Ronning. Burial will take place at Lake Mary Cemetery. Pallbearers are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are her nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at New Life Christian Church and continue one hour prior to the service.

Helen was born August 8, 1917 to Martin and Mary (Kalina) Bartos at home on the family farm in Reno Township, Pope County. She attended country school in Lake Reno Township through the 8th grade. Following her education, she helped on the family farm. She met her future husband, Frank R. Vacek and they were united in marriage on October 4, 1937, at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Following their marriage they worked on the Vacek family farm in Lake Mary Township. To this union, a daughter, Bonnie was born on January 4, 1945.

Helen’s family and home were what she treasured most. She was a devoted farm wife, helping with milking the cows, gardening and caring for her family. She continued living on the farm until her husband of 59 years died on December 14, 1996.

Following Frank’s death, Helen moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, where she continued living until the time of her death. Her hobbies included latch hook and embroidering items for her family. Anyone who visited Helen’s home enjoyed her wonderful baking and cooking. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Arlan) Kakac of Alexandria; two grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Bolton of Fargo, North Dakota and Mathew (Cindee) Kakac of Alexandria; six great-grandchildren, Harmony, Cameron and Preston Bolton and Samantha, Benjamin and Elizabeth Kakac; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bartos of Glenwood; nieces and nephews, Roland Fischer, Myrna Hammer, LaMayne Vacek, Janet Nemmers, Joanne Nelson, Joyce Ferguson, DuWayne Pavek, Dennis Portner, Darlene Baker, Janice Disrud, Kathy Sibell, Sherri Faehnrich, Larry Radil and Roland Radil.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; three sisters, Marion Zavadil, Ann Danek and Lillian Radil; and two brothers, Oliver Bartos and James Bartos.
