Arnold Schultz, 84, Osakis, died Sunday, December 4, 2011 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
On October 17, 1927 in Little Sauk Township, Todd County, Christian and Verna (Martin) Schultz became the proud parents of a son they named Arnold Robert. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Arnold graduated from Osakis High School in 1945. He then served his country in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947.
After his return from the service, Arnie was involved in a car accident that left him with a spinal cord injury. He was told he would never walk, work or be able to have a family. But Arnie would prove the doctors wrong on all accounts.
On December 9, 1950 he married Charlotte Mikkelson at Osakis Lutheran Church. Arnie had purchased the Osakis Pool Hall in 1949 and owned it until 1971. He then became the manager of the Osakis VFW Post. In 1974 he was hired by the city of Osakis to manage the Osakis Liquor Store. After his retirement, the Schultzs owned and operated the Little Store for another 13 years.
He was a member of Osakis Lutheran Church and a life member of the Osakis VFW. He served the post as the quartermaster for seven years and was on the house committee.
Some of Arnie’s hobbies included coin collecting, woodworking and refinishing, and playing cribbage. He had a sharp mind and enjoyed challenging himself with crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He enjoyed people and was known as a practical-joke player. He was very quick-witted and always ready with a funny story to tell. In his early years, he liked to get outdoors pheasant hunting. Arnie had a passion for reading the newspaper each morning and staying aware of current events.
Arnie is survived by his wife, Charlotte Schultz of Osakis; children, Robert (Mary) Schultz of Osakis, Richard (Tami) Schultz of St. Joseph and Kristin Barrett of Osakis; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Darwin (Geneva) Schultz of Forest Lake and Fred Schultz of Alexandria; a sister, Shirley Gillan of Sauk Centre; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were held Thursday, December 8 at Osakis Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ron Calvert officiating. Organist was Pat Converse and soloists were Myron and Allen Larson. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the members of the Osakis VFW Post #7902. Military honors were provided by the Post #7902 Honor Guard.
