Sherman was born December 9, 1925 in Kerkhoven Township, the son of Simon and Eunice (Peterson) Kolstad. He grew up on a farm in Swift Falls, where his father was also the local blacksmith. He was baptized and confirmed at Rolling Forks Church. Sherman attended country school in rural Swift Falls and graduated from Benson High School. He then enlisted into the United States Army Air Corps.

Sherman was united in marriage to Margaret Mitteness on June 26, 1948 in Swift Falls. The couple was blessed with four children, Marie, Steve, Jeff and David. They made their home around the Benson area as they started their married life, and later made many moves all across the country. In 1962, the couple moved to the Twin Cities where Sherman worked for Cargill, Inc. Sherman retired from Cargill after 32 years of service and they then moved to Florence, Oregon. The couple eventually moved to Alexandria in 1993, where they have spent the rest of their retirement years.

Sherman enjoyed the outdoors, walking, backpacking and fishing. He also enjoyed all variety of home construction projects. Sherman loved to travel with Margaret as they took many trips within the states and all parts of the world. Most of all, Sherman loved to be with his family and friends whether it be camping, at the lake, or during the holidays visiting with his grandchildren, he cherished the time he had with each of them.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Kolstad; parents, Simon and Eunice Kolstad; brothers, Omar, Ervin and Laverne Kolstad; sisters, Corah, Viola and Lucille.

Sherman is survived by his children, Marie Kolstad of Forest Grove, OR, Steve (Cathy) Kolstad of Yachats, OR, Jeff (Bev) Kolstad of Wayzata, and David (Kerri) Kolstad of White Bear Lake; four grandchildren, Christine (Brian) Webb, Michael (Holly) Kolstad, Graham (Dairea) Byrd and Chelsea Byrd; three great-granddaughters, Jamie, Alissa, and Kayla Webb; great-grandson, Connor Kolstad, and great-great-grandson, Jacob Welton; sisters, Shirley, Verna and Kay; brother, Robert; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held August 26 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Rev. Mark Astrup officiating. Music was provided by Kim Byrne. Interment was at Swift Falls Cemetery, Casket bearers were Marie Kolstad, Steve Kolstad, Jeff Kolstad, Dave Kolstad, Graham Byrd and Chelsea Byrd.
