Verna was born September 27, 1926 at the family farm near Underwood to Bernhardt and Minnie Mathilda Carlson. She attended country school District #95 and graduated from Ashby High School in 1944.
Verna was working as a telegrapher for Great Northern Railroad in Barnesville when she met and later married Arthur C. Olstad on February 2, 1947. The couple resided in Alexandria before moving to Evansville in August of 1953, where they raised their two children, Darrell and Claudia. In September of 2005 she became a resident of Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Her hobbies included reading, needlework, gardening and crafts. She was an avid animal lover and dearly loved her cocker spaniels, Penney and Sandy, and her poodles, Pepper, Babbett and Kirby. Family was very important to her and she cherished their visits. Verna also enjoyed the Carlson family reunions, which were hosted by her parents for 24 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Ben and Minnie; her husband, Art, in 1983; a sister, Irene Saurer; two brothers, Harvey and a stillborn brother; and a son-in-law, Michael Lunning.
Survivors include a son, Darrell (Kay) of Virginia and daughter, Claudia Lunning of Spring Park; three grandchildren, Jackie Cook, Michael (Chelsea) and Joe Olstad; a great-grandchild, Tristan Olstad; along with a host of family and friends.
Funeral services were held May 10 at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville with Pastor Steve Olson officiating. Interment was at Mayville Cemetery in Mayville, ND.
