Aven Wilton Berg, 83, Osakis, died December 29, 2010 at Community Memorial Home in Osakis.

Aven was born January 2, 1927 in Osakis to Carl and Grace (Williams) Berg. Aven attended school and also farmed with his family. He was cared for and mentored by his uncle, Bill Berg. Aven served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge, Aven returned to the Osakis area.

On October 5, 1948 he married Kathleen Becker at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River. For more than 10 years, Aven worked for the Osakis Silo Company, building silos. He then worked with Osakis Telephone Company and later at Withers Manufacturing. Aven was then hired at the Land O’ Lakes facility in Alexandria as a boilerman, first class. When the company closed their Alexandria plant and relocated to their Browerville branch, Aven worked there until his retirement in 1988.

Aven was a member of Immaculate Conception parish in Osakis and was also an active member of the Osakis VFW Post, the Osakis Sportsmen’s Club and the Nelson’s Men’s Club.

Besides welding and doing small engine repairs, Aven liked to work in his large garden and experiment with homemade beer and wine-making. He also played a mean game of horseshoes. In summer and winter alike, he liked to get out on the lake – especially to fish for northern and panfish. Many of his friends and neighbors looked forward to the season when Aven would go netting for Lake Osakis whitefish, for he was always generous in sharing with others the delicious smoked fish he made from them.

During the fall he enjoyed going deer, duck and goose hunting, and trapping. Once the snow came, he would tune-up the snowmobiles for sledding all winter. Traveling to visit relatives, going camping, and taking in area bluegrass festivals were other pastimes he enjoyed.

Aven is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Kathy Berg of Osakis; two children, Ron (Vianne) Berg of Forest Lake and Carol (Owen) Michaelson of Osakis; five grandkids, Erin Long, Craig, Crystal, Curtis and Caitlyn Michaelson: two great-grandchildren, Ava Long and Cameron Tubbs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leverne, Wayne and Eldon Berg; and his sister, Mildred Wiseman.

A Mass of Resurrection was held on Monday, January 3 at Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis with. Fr. Andrew Marthaler officiating. Musicians were the church funeral choir with a solo to Amazing Grace sung by Dana Hetland. Honorary bearers were the members of the Osakis VFW Post #7902. Military honors were provided by the Osakis VFW Post Honor Guard.

Arrangements are with Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis; www.royhetland.com.
