Robert was born on April 10, 1930 in Ben Wade Township, Pope County. He was the son of Henry and Antonia (Kuchynka) Chan. Bob grew up on the family farm and attended school in Lowry. On November 14, 1950, Bob joined the United States Navy. He honorably served his country before he was discharged on August 19, 1954.
Bob was united in marriage to Lorraine Hansen on August 23, 1955 in Hunter, North Dakota. The couple made their home in Lowry before moving to Alexandria for a few years and then back to Lowry. Bob and Lorraine were blessed with three children.
Bob worked at the Hatchery in Lowry for almost 30 years. While living in Alexandria, he worked as a police officer for a few years; and later in life worked for Lowry Manufacturing, WASP and Tom’s Food Pride. Bob was always busy and also had many other part-time jobs; including being a substitute postal carrier, caretaker of the senior apartments where he lived, and being in charge of the Lowry community center where he would open the door for the children while they waited for their school busses.

He held many city offices; he was the Lowry fire chief, Lowry mayor, on the city council along with being the city clerk for many years. Bob was very active in the Lowry American Legion, where he was a past post commander. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Bob enjoyed hunting, especially deer and turkeys. He was one of the founders of Gobblers of Glacial Ridge and supported the Pope County Pheasant Restoration. He also enjoyed ice fishing and watching the Minnesota Twins. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Bob will be remembered for his big heart, his great smile and laugh. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, neighbor and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
