Vivian was born March 6, 1920 in Starbuck to Henry and Gina (Klevann) Aslagson. She grew up in the rural Starbuck area, where she was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith by the Rev. G.O. Forde at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Vivian graduated in 1938 as valedictorian of her Starbuck High School class. She then attended one year of normal training in Glenwood, and after graduating, furthered her education at Moorhead State Teachers College. After graduating, she returned to Starbuck and taught in rural schools in the Starbuck and Kensington areas.
On July 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to Arthur J. Olson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck. They farmed and made their home in Milbank, South Dakota until 1947, at which time they returned to Starbuck, where they lived and farmed for 36 years in Langhei Township. In 1983, they retired and moved into Starbuck, where they lived until moving to the Glenwood Estates Apartments in 2003. Art passed away on February 9, 2005. Viv has continued to live at Glenwood Estates since that time.
She is survived by five children, Joseph (Gail) Olson of Graham, WA, James (Peggy) Olson of New Prague, Mary (Carroll) Suckstorff of Kensington, David (Kathy) Olson of Coon Rapids and Daniel (Diane) Olson of Brandon; 17 grandchildren, Josh (Michelle) Olson, Luana (Mark) Ciccarelli, Regina (Danny) Brill, Tanya (Chad) Friese, Sarah (Justin) Hoidahl, Ryan (Brittany) Suckstorff, Kristi (Jason) Wildman, Trevor Olson, Trent Olson, Kyle Olson, Taryn Olson, Kari Olson, Trista Olson, Kailley Olson, Andrew Olson (fiancée, Maria), Jocelyn Olson and Nicki Olson; 10 great-grandchildren, Alyvia Brill, Maddie Ciccarelli, Austin Friese, Ayden Friese, Evan Friese, Jayden Hoidahl, Kendall Hoidahl, Kaylee Suckstorff, Aubri Suckstorff and Miles Wildman; three sisters-in-law, Florence Hensel of Park Rapids, Margaret Aslagson of Starbuck and Muriel Aslagson of Starbuck; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one great-granddaughter, Kirsta Suckstorff; daughter-in-law, Marlys (Odegaard) Olson; her parents; two brothers, Harry and Sidney Aslagson and infant twin siblings.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 14 at East Zion Lutheran Church of rural Starbuck. The Rev. Becky Worner officiated. Burial was at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service were all of Vivian’s grandchildren. Monica Gosseling served as organist for the service, with special music provided by Monica Gosseling and the Rev. Becky Worner.
