Cathy Joanne Engelby, 56, died peacefully August 3, 2010 with her family, Steve, Kristel, Darcie, Steve and Judy at her bedside at the Good Samaritan Center in Hoffman, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Cathy was born in Graceville on August 24, 1953 to William “Bill” and Lorna (Jurgens) Boerner. One of five children, she grew up on the family farm where she learned the benefit of hard work and hard play, which served her well in her future.
Cathy was baptized, confirmed and married at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church in Donnelly. On November 29, 1980 she was united in marriage to Steven Engelby. They spent their life in Hoffman, later moving to their home outside of town. They had two daughters, Kristel, born in 1982, and Darcie, born in 1983.
Cathy graduated from Herman High School in 1971 and from Moorhead Tech in 1972. In the spring of 1972 she started her first job with the state of Minnesota in education in St. Paul. She loved her jobs with the state. She worked for the departments of education, welfare and natural resources.
Cathy was a member of Messiah Lutheran in Hoffman. She cherished her family and friends and always enjoyed the potlucks and can parties at Elk Lake. She enjoyed playing softball, her fishing trips to Lake of the Woods at Angle Outpost Resort and later Flag Island Resort, deer hunting with the Buckridge Hunting Club – especially hunting in the nook with the “pretty deer.”
She loved to crochet, embroider, knit, sew and can, sharing her love fo this with the gifts she gave to family and friends. The crochet group and cooking class group were very special to her.
Cathy’s passion was her family – Steve, Kristel and Darcie. Later adding wonderful son-in-law, Steve, was a huge bonus to her. She cherished her family, encouraged her daughters, and followed her daughters with their sports activities. She was always so proud and thankful for each one of them.
Cathy had a courageous, determined and very positive attitude, which she showed to all of those around her. She taught all who knew her how to fight cancer and later pass on with respect.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Lorna Boernew; and brother-in-law, Allen Engelby.
