Mary Martha Linder Sorenson Schluter, 70, Kensington, died March 13, 2010, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood with Pastor David Wallin officiating.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home on the day of the service.  Interment will follow at Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.

Mary was born June 30, 1939 to Robert Harold Linder and Miriam Wilson Linder in Minneapolis. On February 23, 1945, Mary’s father was killed while flying as a fighter pilot in WWII. When Mary was 8, her mother married Felix Sorenson, who was a railroad engineer. Her family moved several times, ultimately ending up in Glenwood. Mary graduated from Glenwood High School in 1957. On April 11, 1956, she married Russell Schluter in South Dakota.

In 1960, Mary went to work at Glenwood Community Hospital as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and worked there until 1968 when she and her family moved to St. Francis. In 1973, she started working at Mercy Medical Center as a CNA in the operating wing, where she worked until 1982 when she and her family moved to the Park Rapids area. In 1984, Mary was hired by 3M at Wonewok, 3M’s conference center. She worked there until June 1, 2001, when she retired. Following her retirement, she and Russell moved to Kensington where Russell and their sons owned a manufacturing shop. In 2002, Russell became very ill and with the help of her family, Mary was able to care for him at home until his death on October 12, 2007. 

Mary enjoyed playing music, gardening, crafting and needle work.

Mary is survived by her four children, William (Felicia) Schluter of Starbuck, Miriam (Larry) Hiscock of Nevis, Robert (Kim) Schluter of Osage, and Margo (Rick) Boyd of Park Rapids; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew Sorenson of Akeley; sister, Judy Champion of Florida; aunt, Brigetta “Pidge” Linder of Oak Park Heights; two dear adopted sisters and their husbands, Arlou and Rod Femrite of Alexandria and Luonna and Tom Frank of Alexandria; along with many nieces and nephews; four cousins and several sisters-in-law.

Mary was preceded in death by her dear husband of 51 years, Russell, in 2007; parents, Miriam and Robert Linder; maternal grandparents, Ara and Martha Wilson and paternal grandparents, George and Nina Linder; brother, John Wilson Linder; three infant nieces and one infant nephew; one infant great-grandson; three sisters-in-law, Blanche Olson, Violet Edmunds and Charmein Sandvig; and brothers-in-law, Arthur Aaberg and Melvin Edmunds.

Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
