David was born April 23, 1927 in Osakis Township, Todd County, to Olaus and Petra (Stenoien) Klukken. He was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church in Osakis. He worked on the family farm while finishing his high school education.
On September 12, 1953, David married Rosemary Lund. They farmed side by side in Brandon Township. In 1960, David was involved in a farming accident, but persevered and continued farming until his retirement in 1988.
David was an active member of the Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon. He enjoyed being a member of the music group Gospel Messengers where he enjoyed sharing his gift of music and love of Christ. He was the Brandon Township clerk for 26 years. He enjoyed his John Deere 4020, his vehicles, and deer hunting. David also enjoyed going to the local restaurants to visit with the guys, being with family and friends, and most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren. In September 2007, David made Bethany Nursing Home his new home where he continued to share his gift of friendly conversation with everyone. He moved to Knute Nelson in September 2009.
He is survived by his daughter, Renee Brethorst of Eden Prairie and her children, Brittany and Bryce Brethorst; daughter-in-law, Audrey Klukken of Parkers Prairie and her children, Christopher, Crystal, Dylan and Aspen Klukken; brother, Bill Klukken of Miles City, MT; twin sister, Delores Nelson of Brandon; sister, Elizabeth (Donald) Johnson of Roscoe, IL; many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Olaus and Petra; wife, Rosemary; son, Darwin; brothers and sisters, Orville Klukken, Beulah Sunde, Helen Lehse, Violet Klukken and Donald Klukken.
A funeral service was held Saturday, February 27 at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon with the Rev. Michael Peterson officiating and nephew, the Rev. Brad Sunde provided the message. Organist was Ramona Ranstrom. Interment was at Chippewa Lutheran Cemetery in Brandon. Casket bearers were Dan Johnson, David Lehse, Duane Nelson, Kevin Nelson, Ron Nelson, Steve Nelson, Tim Nelson and Lynn Rossum. Honorary casket bearers were David’s grand-nephews, grand-nieces and godchildren.
