Selma Freida Wussow, 92, died February 1, 2010 at Douglas County Hospital.
Selma was born December 25, 1917 in Miltona to Fred and Emma (Krese) Henning. She was baptized and confirmed in German at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Miltona. She attended country school through the 8th grade.
Selma was united in marriage to Edwin Wussow on June 14, 1940 at Zion Lutheran Parsonage. The family farmed in the Osakis and Garfield area before buying the family farm in Leaf Valley, where they farmed for almost 40 years, retiring in 1976. Before retiring from the farm, Selma also cooked at Pilgrim Point and Mount Carmel during the summer. After retiring from the farm, Selma worked at the DAC as a cook.
She enjoyed making buns, bread, cinnamon rolls, glazed raised doughnuts, and decorating birthday cakes for her grandkids. During the summer months, Selma would bake buns and glazed raised doughnuts for tourists and resorts. Bailey from Bailey’s Resort would come in his bright yellow Cadillac convertible with the top down to pick up cinnamon rolls and bread for the resort. On an occasion, Selma would surprise friends and family with a couple dozen raised doughnuts or cinnamon rolls. Selma loved being a grandma and spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved her flower garden, quilting and collecting cookbooks. She will be remembered as the “Speed Queen” of Leaf Valley.
She is survived by her sons, Roger and Jan of Garfield, Dale and Debbie of Alexandria; daughters, Sandra Rau and Dave of Starbuck, Geraldine Crane and Chuck of Alexandria; daughter-in-law, Mary Wussow; nine grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Daryn, Jessica, Daniel, Deanna, Christopher, Rebecca and Cassandra; four great-grandchildren, Jayden, Hunter Riehl, Ian Felton, William Wussow; sister, Helen Frier; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; son, Dean; parents; and brothers, Norman, Melvin and Lloyd.
