Robert was born August 25, 1930 to Jay D. and Fern C. (Duebendorf) LaMere in Glencoe. He was baptized by his grandfather, the Rev. Gottlieb Duebendorf, on September 8, 1930. He grew up in Glencoe, played guard on the undefeated high school football team and graduated from Glencoe High School in 1948. He completed a basic draftsman course at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis in 1950.
In 1951, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as a cartographer in Seoul, Korea until 1953. Following his honorable discharge, Bob finished his education at the University of Minnesota, Department of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1955.
He was united in marriage to Dorothea “Dottie” Smith December 17, 1955 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Flandreau, South Dakota by the Rev. Richard Nelson. They lived in Le Seuer, where he worked for Roschen Funeral Home. He also worked at Klein Funeral Home in St. Peter before moving to Parkers Prairie in 1965, where he owned and operated the funeral home until his retirement in July of 1992.
Since 1995, Bob and Dottie enjoyed five months of winter each year in Englewood, Florida and the rest of the year in Parkers Prairie. Bob was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1965, and served on the church council. He was an associate member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Englewood, Florida. He was Scoutmaster of Troop #472 for several years, a member of the Parkers Prairie Lions Club, Commercial Club and Sportsmen’s Club. He was a serious sportsman and an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed photography, the outdoors, sports on television, working crossword puzzles and learning how to water ski at age 50.
Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothea “Dottie”; two daughters, Sally (Mark) Rodgers of Bemidji and Amy (Roger) James of Marshall, Michigan; his mother-in-law, Hannah Smith of Flandreau, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, Jay LaMere, Emily Rodgers, Josh (Erica) LaMere, Kristen Rodgers, Seth James, Kezia James, John James and Eli James; three great-grandchildren, Olivia, Mason and Isaiah; and two nephews, Bruce (Larissa) LaMere and Luke (Jan) LaMere.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Dawn; and his brother, Bruce.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 1 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie with the Rev. Jonathan Sorum officiating. Music was provided by organist, Dean Swanson and vocalist, Dedra Zwieg. Burial was at Parkers Prairie Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rick Gappa, David Gappa, Joe Dorn, Dick Barrows, Ron Zaun and Tom Myers.
